A good WNW wind thru last night probably moved more fish near shore or into the tribs from Lake Ontario but dont look for those fish to loiter in estuary or rivermouth spots at this point in the season. Then, with 10 days of flat water, along with the number of tournaments & derbies held and the pressure of a lot of fishing boats within a 10 mile x 1 mile stretch, the fish diminished their desire to bite. Either way theres still a good head of turbine flow thats full bore or close to full bore and the water color is slowly getting better. Widewaters is never drawn-down and is the hot spot for bass this time of year. Anglers at the dam are getting their steelhead hook ups, including a few nice fish. There are miles of water for fish to be dropping back from compared to about only a short mile of Oak water. Real light fishing pressure today, only one car observed in the parking spots on the Oak. Slightly lower flows will likely reveal more browns then thought when the water was higher. Some Lake Effect Snow showers has amounted to a few more inches of fluffy accumulation on top of the 1-2 ft previous snow. Tough time of the year for any serious drying out since everything will wind up essentially as runoff. Lots of optimism for trib season chances ahead on good returns from the steelhead pen rearing renewed project since 2019. Here on the Niagara Frontier, it was heaviest and there are lesser accumulations south of here. That may well all blow out after this latest round of precipitation. Parking will not be allowed at anytime on the road at the top of the driveway and therefore no walk in access down the driveway. They fished way off shore on the Pirate Queen with Captain Tom Wolfe. Classic drifting, not so much. Our best spoons were Geezer, UV Watermelon, Midnight Special, Wonderbread, and 42nd. Flows in the Oak are still humming along at slightly high consisting of a good head of turbine water. The trout follow the salmon looking for an egg meal. That should make for cleaner drifts, although with a late leaf fall, look for continued usually daily water level fluctuations thanks to hydro power operations. And that is part of the formula for steelhead hookups being on the water after a spate of water. A fall cool down on the backside of the weekend rains is upon us! Theres still lots of upstream headwater swamp supplies in the Oak. When that fish hit the deck, big boy hit the 200 diver and headed for Niagara county. Anglers on the Oak reported small pods of Kings on the move thru the fast water areas yesterday. The other area smaller waterways are about mod with water color of about 2+ ft of viz. In the Steelhead Division, Karen Mang of East Concord, NY is top fish catcher with a 16-pound, 12-ounce Olcott fish. We did not take one fish on flasher/fly. All the trib flows are on the rise and going off color. That good run of Kings in the Oak from end of last week has spread out nearest the dam, but guys are finding pods of spawning fish in the downstream fast water reaches.
