We want our kids to live our core values and if they dont live them, I have now learned that I have to get rid of them. Coach Dorrance: I just finished reading a book and Im going to recommend it to all of your listeners right now. And Ive learned that youre not going to change everyone. Thats my evaluation of whether or not theyre responding to anything Im telling them. To the minute, its telling me whats going to happen in every single second of this practice. So all these things are critical. And so what Im also telling them at every opportunity is live our core values. And they brought Brodsky in and Brodsky sat down all of his PhD candidates and masters candidates in Russian literature and assigned them all of this Russian literature and poetry to memorize. They do not want to excel. Melissa: And where do you seek these new ideas? Lets go back and tell him that hes crazy. So I get all my leaders together. Just give me the tools. They have come from philosophers, writers, former captains, and even a team manager. Were trying to drive them to be accountable and to take responsibility for everything because in a typical narrative you dont. But whats shocking to us is how often extraordinary talent never gets on the field. And so I learned a lot from Jack. Theres another level in you. And she gave the most wonderful senior exit speech Ive ever heard. And theyre all forced to memorize this, The true joy in life is to be a force of fortune instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. So any time we catch anyone whining in our program theyre forced to recite that. Anson: Well, because of my experience. And its often a sore subject, too. Anson: Well, actually, I mean, Ive got a lot of others that I can throw out there for you, because let me tell you about potential. Ive had so many train wreck failures in leadership I dont know, I could write a book on failing to develop leaders. So its almost like a gender pressure against leadership. I mean, I thought I could play for anyone. So tell us, how do you convince some woman to transfer or to quit the team? They are sprinting all over the place going from one session to the other, there was no break. But also Id love to be a mind reader. Because we recruit extraordinary talent. And obviously it sounds like, Melissa, you do your own hiring. Now Ive had leaders and Ive given them opportunities to lead. If I have a 30 player roster at the end of every night, I have three analytics boys that are getting degrees in statistics here, convert that days practice into data and theyre ranked, theyre ranked from one to 30. Im trying to drive every one of my kids to their potential. Its my laboratory of the human spirit for leadership development, which is the most failed leadership platform in the world, because Ive never developed a frigging leader out of it. Theyll know if their preparation isnt good enough coming into the session. Hes won 22x National Championships, has one of the most successful coaching records in the history of athletics, leading his team during a 101-game unbeaten streak and coaching 13 different women to a total of 20 National Player of the Year awards. And we would give speeches and then Jack Welch, the famous CEO of General Electric, would get up there on a stage and sit in a comfortable chair like Im doing now. Now obviously I need verbal leaders. And it changed, it changed her cerebral fabric. Anson: Well, its hit or miss, I mean. And heres what she tells me. And in changing that and sending then in the right direction all of a sudden a substandard player goes to a different level because now shes finally accountable for performance, whereas earlier she had a narrative that protected her from being responsible and accountable, and now all of a sudden we expose that, and now shes selected to be more accountable and her game goes to a completely different level. Then he shifted the next slide, to 2012, the year we were in. So whats critical for you, and actually the hiring process is everything for you, and so this is where, again, this is something that Jack Welch used to say, and I loved it. But basically thats one of many failed experiments that Ive done with my leaders. The top three in my program ended up winning gold medals in the Olympics, and ended up winning world championships in the United States. The girls you get to coach, and across college athletics, all the players that come through programs are going to move on at some point and join a workforce and work their way through and hopefully become leaders. And so I really appreciated that. Here is the problem, especially now in our modern culture. So its not an email you can send out to your 6,000 employees and hope to lead them. Now, some of this could be very aggressive, but if you love them, they will sense it. actually neither that ancient, nor Chinese. [Driving] all of us freaking, you know, batshit crazy, just keep quiet. If they wanted to work for you, they would not be in the bottom 10%. So live my core values and then theyll see the quotes from the core values that are in their recommendations that are getting kids into Harvard, and Stanford and all the elite companies in America. And heres whats critical in the performance review. And we develop such an incredible mentality. He was the first coach in NCAA history to win 20 championships coaching a single sport. So heres my dream, and Ive stolen this entirely from Arthur Blank, so I want to credit him before I start bloviating about it. In the old days, because I love reading business books, Ive read all the business books of best sellers and Ive read them all. And so often time its not just the training environment thats critical for us, its how we can get into, again, the mindset of the players to get them to change a certain mindset or a narrative thats protecting them from getting to their potential. The professor had some literature that I found so powerful that I now use it with my team. Anson: Hi. It lists and explains the core values that have shaped the culture and behavior of Anson Dorrances soccer teams over the years. And usually it blames someone else. Because what it tells me is it tells me about potential. And then she said, and this is a wonderful backhand compliment, she said, you know, after I played for you, I felt like a play for anyone. The coach hates me. Theyre just whining and whining about everything under the sun. He knows a thing or two about winning. Under some delusion that these parents have, they think that by trying to raise their children with this idea of self-esteem or their praise for everyone, which is a part of the culture where everyone gets a trophy, they have eliminated standards for their own children. When you fire these people, they are going to hate you for the rest of their lives, but they dont want to work for you. And then what was really cool is in the spring of every players senior year we have our final banquet. In my experience its a crock. It occurred to me you might find them refreshing as well. And obviously continued success and. Because I have tried to completely change someone and I havent. First five guys, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and practice performance. And then all of a sudden five minutes before the practice session begins a manager of the team comes up and hands us a practice outline of whats going to happen. And heres the other thing that Jack was so good about explaining to me. They guide the players from season to season, practice to practice, minute to minute. And of course theyre going to agree with me, I think I am better. And she and her colleagues were insulted, and this cabal got together and basically said I dont think Professor Brodsky understands who hes dealing with here. And were notwere flexible. Coach Dorrance's teams have won 22 NCAA national titles and 20 of 27 ACC championships. I want them to basically be wonderful leaders, and the principles of our core values, or what we try to drive everyone in the program to live. Anson: And obviously, so now Iobviously I dont talk about having them destroy a program. And Im looking at this thinking, you know, well this is all Ive done my whole life. The first slide he showed was all I needed, and here was the first slide. He has one of the most successful coaching records in the history of athletics. And now all of a sudden theres this circular narrative built with the player that now the players feeding off of. Now is the period to escape the protection of loving parents that dont want you to get hurt. You have 4 years to get ready for the chaos at the university.
